Banners have been used throughout biblical history to identify God and his people, to announce His victories and proclaim His mighty attributes. Psalm 60:4 states, "a banner is given to them that fear the Lord and is displayed because of truth." Our theme Bible verse for the banner ministry is Psalm 20:5 "We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of God we will set up our banners."
The Banner Ministry at First Baptist Church was begun approximately 17 years ago under the leadership of Esther Walker, wife of former Pastor, Dr. Ian Walker. Mrs. Walker enlisted the women of the church to construct fabric banners depicting the names of Jesus to be used as a means of encouraging worship. Over the course of several years, individuals and small groups of women constructed 24 of these banners which are still in use today.
In 2000 I was asked to coordinate an ongoing Banner Ministry at FBC with the primary goal of creating a series of banners representing the books of the Bible as well as preserving the existing banners. As we create Bible Banners and new ones depicting the names of Jesus, we study the Bible to ensure that the symbolism is Biblically accurate. Each facet of the banners have a scriptural basis. The Bible Banner Series illustrates the theme of each book and has a scripture verse portrayed on the back. This series makes a stand for the power and inerrancy of God's mighty word!
We are thankful that our church supports this ministry of praise and fellowship. There are no special skills required for banner making...there is very little sewing involved. If you like to cut and glue and enjoy fellowship, please come work with us! We have a lot of fun as we meet three times a week in Room 2247 on the second floor in the old education building. We meet on Sunday afternoons during the children's choir practice hour. On Monday we work from 10:30-11:30 a.m. and on Wednesday evenings from 6:00-7:30. If you have any questions regarding the Banner Ministry, please call me, Kathy Gibson, at 587-2919. Please come join us in the ministry of praise and worship.
