|"...In as much as you have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me." (Matthew 25:40)
Appalachian Outreach, a ministry of Carson Newman College, is located near the campus in Jefferson City. Since 1984, A.O. has been serving the needy in Hamblen, Jefferson, Cocke and Grainger counties. Only 13 miles from the front door of our church, A.O. provides a golden opportunity for volunteers to impact the lives of our neighbors for our Lord in ways that will last throughout eternity.
Here are some of those opportunities---
Homeless shelter: In 2007, 51 families (60 adults and 41 children) found shelter at Samaritan House. Bible study provides an avenue for residents to hear the Gospel. Leaders are needed. Cooks are needed to prepare and deliver evening meals.
Home repair: Many of our neighbors are found living wwithout simple necessities (no electricity, no water, no bathroom, etc.) In 2007, 40 families recieved assistance. Volunteer teams are needed for everything from painting to room additions.
Clothing, Food and Furniture Ministries: Large donations of food, clothing and furniture are received at A.O. on a daily basis. Volunteers are needed to sort and prepare these items for distribution to families in the community. An incredible 5,644 families received clothing, 3,728 baskets of food and 1,216 furniture items were distributed in the past year.
Other opportunities include but are not limited to:
- Cutting and splitting firewood
- Bicycle and vacuum cleaner repair
- Ground crew yard work/parking lot maintenance
- Organizing and maintaining tools and building materials
- Vehicle maintenance and repair
- Small engine repair/maintenance (lawn equipment, generators)
The door is open for service to our Lord. Are you willing to walk through?
